On April 22, 2024, the annual conference of the Building Materials Recycling Association took place under the motto “New Ways for Building Materials Recycling”. The venue was the historic Austria Trend Parkhotel Schönbrunn in Vienna’s 13th district Hietzing. More than 250 participants from the construction industry and related sectors attended this important industry get-together.
The event, one of the central platforms in the field of building materials recycling, was opened by Federal Minister Leonore Gewessler via video message. After the opening, the program began with a series of presentations covering news and developments in the field of recycled building materials. The focus was on the implementation of recycling-oriented tenders and the promotion of building material recycling. A special highlight was the presentation of the UP!crete project by Prof. Merta.
A central topic of the conference was the promotion of sustainable, recyclable building materials through their implementation in tenders. The EU is demanding high recycling rates in the construction sector and the national target is to reduce the consumption of primary raw materials by 25 % by 2030. The Austrian construction industry is preparing for these substantial changes. For concrete, one of the most frequently used building materials in the world, higher replacement rates of natural aggregates with recycled aggregates and the use of the fine fraction produced during the processing of construction waste are important levers. The UP!crete project is working intensively on these challenges and the associated changes.
