The 15th fib International PhD Symposium in Civil Engineering, hosted by the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib), took place from August 28. to 30. 2024, in Budapest, Hungary. The event brought together PhD researchers to share their latest findings in structural concrete and sustainable engineering.

Representing the UP!crete Project from the TU Wien, Prof. Ildiko Merta attended alongside PhD candidates Daniella Mehanni and Bayram Tutkun. Both presented their research related to the project’s goal of improving the sustainability of concrete production. Daniella Mehanni presented her PhD research concept on “Valorisation of Waste Slurries: Aqueous Carbonation of Recycled Fines in Industrial Waste Water”. Bayram Tutkun shared the first results from his PhD research  “Negative Emission Pathways Through CO2 Uptake of Powders in Concrete: A Preliminary Study on Influencing Parameters..

In addition to presenting their research, Daniella Mehanni and Bayram Tutkun had the opportunity to meet other PhD candidates working on similar sustainability challenges in concrete technology. This enabled them to make valuable contacts, paving the way for an exchange of ideas and the possibility of future collaboration to promote sustainable practices in the industry.
